The shelter was calm, birds chirping in the distance, but near the corner, a heartbreaking scene was unfolding. A baby monkey—Tito—was whimpering on the ground, confused and frightened, while his mother acted out in a sudden burst of aggression.
She pulled him by his tiny arm, then pushed him away. He tumbled onto his side, squealing in shock. His soft eyes searched her face, not understanding why she was treating him this way.
One moment, she yanked him close. The next, she shoved him away again.
To little Tito, it was terrifying.
“Why is Mom being so mean?”
The ground felt hard beneath his fragile body. His cries grew sharper, but his mother didn’t stop. She was overwhelmed, pacing back and forth, her behavior erratic—perhaps stressed, confused, or irritated by something no one else could see.
But Tito didn’t know any of that. All he felt was pain… and rejection.
Nearby caretakers quickly noticed the distress. One rushed over and gently separated Tito, lifting his trembling body from the dirt. The little one clung tightly, still crying, still shaken, but finally safe.
His mom, now alone, sat down, panting heavily. Her eyes softened—but it was too late to undo what had just happened.
Tito was now in the arms of someone calm. Someone kind.
The caretaker whispered soothingly and rocked him gently, wiping dust from his fur.
No baby deserves to feel fear from their own mother. And while she may not have meant true harm, her actions left a deep mark.
But Tito would heal—with time, love, and a safe place to grow.
Because every baby monkey deserves gentle hands…
And a heart that never pushes them away.
