The morning was calm when Mom decided it was time for little Jasmine to practice taking a few careful steps.
Jasmine stood near the bottom of the stairs, holding onto Mom’s hands for support.
Mom smiled warmly.
“Come on, sweetheart. Let’s take one tiny step.”
Jasmine looked down at her little feet.
Then she looked up at Mom.
Her expression suddenly became worried.
She didn’t seem ready.
Mom gently encouraged her.
“It’s okay. Mommy is right here.”
Jasmine slowly lifted one tiny foot.
But before she could move forward, she became frightened and started crying.
“WAAAAAH!”
Her big eyes filled with tears as she stared directly at Mom.
She reached both arms toward her, clearly asking for reassurance.
Mom stayed close and gently held her hands.
“I know you’re scared, baby. We don’t have to hurry.”
Jasmine cried even louder, looking at the stairs as though they were the biggest challenge she had ever seen.
Dad watched nearby and smiled sympathetically.
“She’s definitely not convinced yet.”
Mom laughed softly.
“That’s okay. She can take her time.”
Instead of asking Jasmine to climb, Mom kept her safely on the lowest step and encouraged her to practice standing and shifting her weight.
Jasmine sniffled.
She looked at Mom.
Then at her little feet.
Mom gently said, “One little step when you’re ready.”
Jasmine slowly moved one foot forward.
For a second, she balanced.
Mom’s face brightened.
“Good girl!”
Jasmine looked surprised.
She had actually done it.
Her crying became quieter.
Mom gave her a reassuring smile.
“See? You can do it.”
Jasmine took another tiny step while holding Mom’s hands.
This time, she didn’t cry.
Dad clapped softly.
“Look at Jasmine!”
A tiny smile appeared on her tearful face.
Mom hugged her gently once the practice was finished.
“You were so brave.”
Jasmine rested her head against Mom’s shoulder.
The stairs had seemed frightening at first, but with Mom beside her, they no longer felt quite so scary.
Mom kissed her forehead.
“Learning takes time, sweetheart. Mommy will always be here to help you.”
Jasmine gave a tiny happy squeak.
The morning ended with a warm cuddle and a proud little smile.
She hadn’t climbed very far.
She hadn’t needed to.
For Jasmine, taking just one small step was already a huge achievement.
