What Is a Sebaceous Cyst?

A sebaceous cyst is a noncancerous lump under the skin, filled with sebum (a thick, oily substance). It usually forms due to blocked sebaceous glands. While most are harmless, they can become infected, leading to pain and swelling.

Causes of Sebaceous Cysts

  1. Blocked Sebaceous Glands – When a gland is clogged with oil and dead skin cells.
  2. Skin Trauma or Injury – Can cause glands to malfunction.
  3. Hormonal Changes – Increased oil production can contribute.
  4. Genetic Factors – Some people are more prone to cyst formation.

Symptoms of an Infected Sebaceous Cyst

  • Redness & Swelling – The cyst becomes inflamed and tender.
  • Pain & Discomfort – More noticeable when pressure is applied.
  • Pus Drainage – A thick, foul-smelling fluid may leak.
  • Fever (Severe Cases) – May indicate a deeper infection.

Treatment Options

1. Home Care (For Small, Non-Infected Cysts)

  • Apply a warm compress (15-20 minutes, 3-4 times daily) to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid squeezing or popping the cyst to prevent infection.

2. Medical Treatments

  • Antibiotics – If the cyst is infected, oral or topical antibiotics may be prescribed.
  • Drainage & Aspiration – A doctor may make a small incision to drain the fluid.
  • Surgical Removal – For recurring or large cysts, a doctor may perform a minor surgical procedure to remove the cyst and prevent regrowth.

When to See a Doctor

  • If the cyst is painful, growing, or showing signs of infection (redness, pus, fever).
  • If the cyst does not improve with home care.
  • If the cyst keeps coming back.

Proper care and early treatment can help prevent complications and ensure healthy skin.
