Selena Whimpers Softly

Selena sat in the middle of the room, her tiny legs folded beneath her, her little hands resting gently on the blanket. The house felt too quiet without her mom. Usually, Mom’s warm presence filled every corner—her soft steps, her gentle touch, her comforting voice. But today, Mom had gone to the market, and Selena couldn’t understand why she wasn’t home yet.

Her big, round eyes scanned the doorway over and over, waiting for even the smallest movement. When nothing happened, she let out a soft moaning sound—a fragile little voice that trembled with sadness. It was the sound of a baby missing the person she trusted most.

She crawled a few steps forward, peeking toward the door again. Still nothing. Her tiny chest rose with a shaky breath, and another soft moan escaped her lips, longer this time. She wasn’t throwing a tantrum. She wasn’t angry. She was simply longing—wondering, hoping, aching for Mom to walk back through that door.

The caregiver tried to comfort her, rubbing her back gently, offering toys and warm milk. But Selena barely reacted. She leaned forward, placing her hand on the floor as she let out another moaning call, her voice full of wonder and worry. Where is Mom? Why isn’t she back yet?

Minutes felt like hours.

Selena finally curled up on the blanket, her tail tucked close, her eyes half-closed but still watching the door. Every sigh came with another quiet moan, as if calling Mom home through pure love alone.

Then—footsteps outside.

Selena’s ears perked instantly. Her head shot up. Her whole body trembled with excitement. When the door finally opened and Mom walked in with her basket from the market, Selena let out the loudest, happiest squeak.

She rushed into her mother’s arms, clinging tightly.

Her waiting, wondering, and moaning were over.
Mom was home.
