In the quiet corner of the sanctuary, a mother monkey named Lani had just given birth to a fragile, beautiful newborn. The tiny baby clung weakly to her chest, eyes still closed, seeking warmth and comfort in his first moments of life.
But something was wrong.
While the newborn cried softly and tried to nurse, Lani sat trembling, her face tense with pain. The birth wasn’t fully over—the placenta hadn’t come out, and she was visibly struggling. Caretakers noticed her discomfort right away.
Lani tried shifting positions. She pulled gently at the leaves around her, searching for comfort, but nothing eased the pain. Her baby whimpered, confused and hungry, pressing his little head to her chest.
The team quickly gathered around her, keeping calm voices and soft movements. One caretaker whispered, “Poor mama… she’s stuck.”
They moved in gently, checking her condition. The placenta had remained inside too long, and it risked infection or serious harm. Lani, exhausted and scared, didn’t fight their help—she knew she needed it.
With careful hands and the help of a vet, they assisted in removing the retained placenta while Lani clutched her baby tightly. She cried softly but didn’t let go. Her eyes met theirs—not angry, just tired and vulnerable.
After it was over, they laid her down with warm blankets, fresh fruit, and water. The baby was safe. Lani rested with her newborn snuggled against her, finally free of pain.
It was a difficult start, but this brave mama showed strength through the struggle. And now, her journey of motherhood could truly begin.
