When orphan baby monkey Calvin was introduced to Mom Casi, rescuers hoped it would be the beginning of a new, loving chapter. Calvin, so small and still grieving his lost mother, clung tightly to anyone who gave him warmth.
But Casi wasn’t ready.
Instead of welcoming him, she showed signs of frustration and rejection. Calvin didn’t understand. Every time he reached out for a cuddle or gently cried for milk, Casi would shove him away harshly, even snap at him. His tiny body trembled—not just from hunger, but from fear.
Once, in front of the caregivers, Casi suddenly grabbed Calvin too roughly and dropped him. The little one rolled over on the ground, letting out a sharp, heartbreaking scream. Everyone froze.
The team stepped in quickly to rescue Calvin. His face was tear-streaked, his heart racing. How could this be the mother he was supposed to trust?
Calvin now spends time with the caregivers during the day, who hold him close, feed him slowly, and soothe him with kind voices. He often looks toward Casi’s area, unsure whether to hope or fear.
The bond is not there yet. But they haven’t given up.
Sometimes Casi watches him quietly from a distance. Once, she even allowed him to sit near her for a few minutes without pushing him away. It’s a start.
