Tiny Jasmine was having a very clingy morning. She wanted Mommy nearby every second, and she wasn’t interested in playing alone, even for a little while. Wherever Mommy went, Jasmine’s little eyes followed her. If Mommy sat down, Jasmine wanted to sit beside her. If Mommy stood up, Jasmine immediately reached out her tiny arms, hoping to be carried.
That morning, Mommy noticed that some clean clothes needed to be collected from another room. She looked down at Jasmine, who was sitting close to the table, and gently explained, “Sweetheart, Mommy is just going to get the clothes. I’ll be back soon.”
But Jasmine didn’t seem to like that plan at all!
The moment Mommy began walking away, Jasmine’s face changed. Her little mouth opened, her eyebrows tightened, and she let out a loud cry.
“Eeeee! Mommy! Mommy!”
Mommy turned around. “I’m right here, Jasmine. I just need to get the clothes.”
Jasmine wasn’t convinced. She crawled toward the table and wrapped her tiny arms around one of its legs, clinging to it as if the table were the only thing keeping her world together. Tears gathered in her eyes, and she cried even louder when Mommy moved farther away.
“Oh, my goodness, little girl!” Mommy said gently. “You really don’t want me to leave, do you?”
Jasmine hugged the table leg tighter and looked toward the doorway. Her cries filled the room, and she seemed determined to call Mommy back immediately. She wasn’t interested in toys, blankets, or anything else. She wanted her mommy!
Mommy felt sorry for her little girl, but she also knew that Jasmine needed to remain safe while she did small household tasks. She put the clothes down for a moment and returned to Jasmine, carefully guiding her away from the table legs so she wouldn’t bump her head or get her fingers caught.
“It’s okay, sweetheart. I’m here,” Mommy whispered.
She crouched beside Jasmine and offered her a comforting cuddle. Jasmine immediately reached toward her, still making little sobbing sounds. Mommy held her gently until her breathing settled and her body began to relax.
“You missed Mommy even though I was only a little way away,” Mommy murmured.
Jasmine rested against her, holding on tightly as if she wanted to make sure Mommy wouldn’t disappear again.
After a few minutes, Mommy placed Jasmine in a secure, comfortable area away from the table and other household hazards. She gave her a familiar toy and stayed nearby while Jasmine began to calm down.
“Mommy needs to do a few things, but you can stay here where I can see you,” she explained softly.
Jasmine sniffled and glanced at the toy. She still looked a little unhappy, but the worst of her crying had passed. Mommy picked up the clothes again, taking only a short step away before checking on her little girl.
Each time Jasmine looked toward her, Mommy answered with a gentle voice and a reassuring smile.
Gradually, Jasmine began to understand that Mommy could move around the room and still remain close by. She reached for her toy, played for a moment, and occasionally looked up to make sure Mommy was still there.
When Mommy finally finished collecting the clothes, she returned and sat beside Jasmine.
“I’m back, my clingy little sweetheart!”
Jasmine immediately reached for her, and Mommy welcomed her into a gentle cuddle. The little monkey settled against her, finally looking peaceful again.
Mommy kissed the top of Jasmine’s head and smiled. She knew that learning to feel comfortable during brief separations would take patience and time.
Sometimes, a little one’s tears simply mean, “I need to know you’re still there.” With gentle reassurance, a safe environment, and patience, that little heart can slowly learn that a short goodbye doesn’t mean being left alone. ❤️
