Little Zuji had been having such a playful morning. She moved around her safe little space, touching everything she could reach and making tiny curious sounds. Mommy watched her closely, smiling whenever Zuji discovered something new. But after a while, Zuji became overly excited and did something Mommy had already warned her not to do. Mommy immediately stepped closer and gently stopped her before she could get into trouble.
“Zuji, sweetheart, no. Mommy told you that isn’t safe,” Mommy said calmly.
Zuji froze.
She looked at Mommy, then looked toward the thing she had been playing with. For a moment, she seemed confused about why Mommy had stopped her. Then she noticed Mommy’s serious expression. Her playful smile disappeared, and her tiny shoulders seemed to sink.
“Eee…”
Mommy carefully moved Zuji to a safe place and explained again. She didn’t shout or frighten her. Instead, Mommy wanted Zuji to understand why the behavior wasn’t allowed. “I’m not angry because I don’t love you. I’m correcting you because I want you to be safe.”
Zuji stared at Mommy’s face.
Her eyes slowly became watery.
She looked down at her tiny hands and began making soft, sad sounds. It seemed like she was finally realizing that she had made a mistake. She rubbed her little fingers together and avoided looking directly at Mommy.
“Eee… Mommy…”
Mommy’s heart softened.
“Oh, my little Zuji,” she whispered. “Come here.”
But Zuji hesitated.
She remained sitting quietly for a few seconds, almost as though she was unsure whether Mommy still wanted her close. Then she slowly reached one tiny hand forward.
Mommy offered her finger.
Zuji grabbed it immediately.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
Mommy gently wiped it away. “You don’t have to be scared, sweetheart. Mommy isn’t going to hurt you. You made a mistake, and now we’re learning from it.”
Zuji looked up.
Her eyes were full of emotion.
She leaned forward and pressed her face against Mommy’s hand. Her little body trembled slightly as she made a quiet whimper.
Mommy gently stroked her head.
“I know. You’re sorry.”
Zuji squeezed Mommy’s finger tighter.
For a while, they simply stayed together. Mommy didn’t rush her. She gave Zuji time to calm down and understand that being corrected didn’t mean she had lost Mommy’s affection.
Eventually, Zuji lifted her head.
Her tears had stopped.
She looked toward the area where she had made the mistake, then back at Mommy. This time, she didn’t try to repeat what she had done.
Mommy noticed immediately.
“Good girl. You remembered.”
Zuji gave a tiny squeak.
Mommy smiled. “That’s all Mommy wanted.”
Suddenly, Zuji crawled closer and climbed into Mommy’s lap. She tucked herself against her and rested her head beneath Mommy’s chin.
Mommy laughed softly.
“Oh, now you want cuddles?”
Zuji closed her eyes.
Her earlier sadness was slowly disappearing.
Mommy continued holding her and gently explained that mistakes happen, but learning from them is important. Zuji didn’t understand every word, but she seemed to understand Mommy’s gentle tone and comforting presence.
After several minutes, Zuji became curious again. She peeked over Mommy’s arm and looked around the room.
Mommy smiled.
“Ready to try again?”
Zuji looked at her.
Then she gave a tiny happy sound.
Mommy carefully placed her back in her safe area and stayed nearby. This time, Zuji played much more calmly. Whenever she became curious about something she shouldn’t touch, she glanced toward Mommy first, almost as though asking for permission.
Mommy noticed and smiled proudly.
“That’s much better, little Zuji.”
Zuji looked pleased.
She hadn’t forgotten the earlier correction. Instead, she seemed to have learned something from it.
Later, when Zuji became sleepy, she returned to Mommy on her own. She climbed into her arms and rested quietly against her chest.
Mommy gently kissed her head.
“You made a little mistake today, sweetheart. But you learned from it. That’s what matters.”
Zuji gave a tiny sleepy squeak.
Her eyes slowly closed.
The tears from earlier were gone, replaced by peaceful comfort. She now knew something important: Mommy could correct her firmly and still love her completely.
And as little Zuji drifted toward sleep in Mommy’s arms, her tiny fingers remained wrapped around Mommy’s hand—as if promising that tomorrow, she would try to make a better choice.
