It was breakfast time, and little Selena and her big brother Ronaldo were already awake. Their tiny eyes followed Mommy around the room as she prepared their morning feeding. They knew exactly what she was doing.
Milk.
The moment Mommy began mixing it, Selena became excited.
“Eee! Eee!”
Ronaldo looked toward the feeding area and started making impatient little sounds too.
Mommy smiled. “Good morning, you two. Your breakfast is coming.”
But Selena and Ronaldo didn’t want to wait.
They sat close together, watching every movement Mommy made. Whenever she picked up the bottle, their eyes became wide. Whenever she put it down to finish preparing the feeding, they became even more impatient.
Selena stretched her tiny hands toward Mommy.
“Eeeee!”
Ronaldo joined in.
“Eee! Eee!”
Mommy laughed softly.
“Oh, my goodness. You two are very hungry this morning!”
The siblings looked at each other, almost as if they were sharing the same complaint: Why is Mommy taking so long?
Selena began moving restlessly while Ronaldo kept looking toward the bottle.
Mommy gently reassured them.
“I know you’re waiting. I’m making sure everything is prepared properly.”
Because they were young monkeys, Mommy followed the feeding guidance appropriate for their species and age. She carefully prepared the correct milk feeding rather than rushing or giving them more than was appropriate simply because they were impatient.
Selena didn’t seem impressed by the explanation.
She cried again.
“Eeeee!”
Ronaldo immediately answered.
“Eeeeee!”
Mommy smiled.
“Are you two having a conversation about breakfast?”
The little siblings continued their noisy complaints.
Mommy finally finished preparing the feedings and checked that everything was ready and at a suitable temperature.
The transformation was immediate.
Selena became quiet.
Ronaldo became quiet.
The two impatient babies suddenly looked very peaceful as they began their morning feeding.
Mommy couldn’t help laughing.
“A few minutes ago, you sounded like the whole house was in trouble!”
Selena focused completely on her feeding.
Ronaldo did the same.
Their earlier frustration seemed completely forgotten.
Afterward, Mommy kept them warm and comfortable and allowed them to rest. Selena looked sleepy, while Ronaldo stayed awake for a little longer, calmly watching his sister.
Mommy gently stroked both of their heads.
“You don’t have to be unhappy, little ones. Mommy hasn’t forgotten your breakfast.”
Selena made a tiny contented sound.
Ronaldo looked toward Mommy and then settled down beside his sister.
The morning had begun with two impatient little monkeys waiting for their milk, but it ended peacefully.
Mommy smiled at them.
“Next time, try to be patient.”
Selena slowly closed her eyes.
Ronaldo followed.
Neither sibling answered.
But their peaceful faces seemed to say they were perfectly satisfied now.
And Mommy knew that tomorrow morning, the moment they saw her preparing their breakfast, the whole performance would probably begin all over again.
