Little Pavpav was having a very emotional morning. The tiny baby monkey had been happily staying close to Mom when she suddenly stood up and walked away for just a few minutes. To Mom, it was only a short moment. But to Pavpav, it felt like she had disappeared forever.
The moment he saw Mom walking away, Pavpav’s little face changed.
He stared after her, then began making loud, upset sounds. “Eee! Eee! Eee!”
Mom turned around. “Pavpav, sweetheart, I’m only going for a minute.”
But Pavpav didn’t seem to understand. He waved his tiny hands and looked extremely angry. He shuffled around on his soft blanket, making more dramatic cries while watching the doorway.
“Mommy! Come back!”
Of course, Pavpav couldn’t say those words, but his expression seemed to say exactly that.
Mom smiled gently from nearby. “I know you don’t like when I leave. But you’re safe, baby.”
Pavpav answered with another loud complaint.
He looked so offended that Mom couldn’t help but laugh softly. His little eyebrows seemed to say, How could you leave me even for one minute?
When Mom returned, Pavpav immediately reached both hands toward her.
“Oh, there you are!” Mom said.
She carefully picked him up and gave him the reassurance he had been waiting for. Pavpav pressed himself close and slowly became quieter.
His anger disappeared almost as quickly as it had arrived.
Mom gently stroked his back. “Were you really that upset because I went away for such a short time?”
Pavpav made a tiny sound and tucked his face closer.
Mom knew that young babies often needed time to learn that a caregiver can leave briefly and still come back. She didn’t scold him for crying or make him feel bad about his emotions. Instead, she stayed calm and helped him feel secure.
After a few peaceful minutes, Pavpav became playful again.
He looked at Mom, then looked toward the doorway as if checking whether she might disappear again.
Mom chuckled. “Don’t worry, little troublemaker. I’m right here.”
Pavpav reached for her hand and held on tightly.
The whole episode had lasted only a few minutes, but it showed just how strongly this tiny baby wanted comfort and reassurance.
Sometimes Pavpav could be wonderfully naughty and dramatic. Sometimes he could be surprisingly emotional. But underneath those big reactions was simply a little baby learning about trust.
And as Pavpav settled peacefully beside Mom, his angry cries were replaced by soft, contented sounds.
Mom kissed the top of his head and whispered, “Even when I step away, I’ll come back.”
This time, Pavpav seemed to believe her.
