It was a cheerful morning when Mom decided to dress little Jasmine in a new outfit.
The clothes were clean, colorful, and completely different from what Jasmine usually wore.
Mom carefully helped her put them on and smiled.
“Look at my beautiful girl!”
But Jasmine didn’t look impressed.
She stared down at the strange outfit with wide, confused eyes.
She tugged at the fabric.
Then she looked up at Mom.
Her little face suddenly became very serious.
Mom gently laughed.
“Do you like your new clothes?”
Jasmine’s answer was immediate.
“WAAAAAH!”
She began crying loudly.
Her tiny hands pulled at the unfamiliar outfit as if she desperately wanted to take it off.
Mom was surprised.
“Oh, sweetheart! You really don’t like this, do you?”
Jasmine shook her little body and continued crying.
She sat down on the soft floor and kicked her tiny feet.
The strange clothing seemed to be making her extremely uncomfortable and frustrated.
Dad walked into the room and smiled.
“Someone has a very strong opinion about her new outfit.”
Jasmine looked at him with watery eyes before turning back toward Mom.
She reached both arms toward her.
She wanted comfort.
Mom knelt beside her.
“I know you’re upset.”
She gently checked the outfit to make sure nothing was pinching or uncomfortable.
When she saw that Jasmine simply disliked the unfamiliar clothes, Mom decided not to force her.
“Okay, sweetheart. We can change.”
But Jasmine was already overwhelmed.
She continued crying loudly, sitting on the soft floor and making little frustrated sounds.
Mom gently stroked her head.
“It’s alright. You don’t have to like every outfit.”
Jasmine slowly looked up at her.
Mom carefully removed the strange outfit and replaced it with one of Jasmine’s familiar, comfortable clothes.
The change was almost immediate.
Jasmine stopped crying for a moment.
She looked down at her familiar outfit.
Then she looked at Mom.
A tiny smile appeared.
Dad laughed softly.
“That was quite a fashion protest!”
Mom smiled and picked Jasmine up.
“You definitely know what you like.”
Jasmine wrapped her little arms around Mom and rested her face against her shoulder.
Her anger slowly disappeared.
Mom gently rocked her.
“Next time, we’ll choose something you feel comfortable wearing.”
Jasmine gave a tiny happy squeak.
After a few minutes, Mom offered her a warm bottle.
Jasmine drank peacefully while cuddled safely in Mom’s arms.
Her earlier tears were completely gone.
When she finished, she rested her sleepy head against Mom’s chest.
Mom kissed her forehead.
“My little girl may have a very strong personality, but Mommy will always listen when something makes you uncomfortable.”
Jasmine closed her eyes peacefully.
The dramatic outfit disaster was over.
What had started as a frustrating morning ended with a warm cuddle, a familiar outfit, and a happy little monkey safely resting in Mom’s loving arms.
