The early morning was peaceful, with gentle sunlight spreading across the yard and birds singing softly from the nearby trees.

But on a small mat near the house, one tiny heart was anything but peaceful.

Little newborn baby monkey Maoming sat alone, wrapped loosely in a soft cloth.

Only a short time ago, Mom had placed him there while she went inside to prepare his fresh diaper, warm milk, and clean clothes.

She would only be gone for a few moments.

But Maoming didn’t understand that.

All he understood was that Mom had disappeared.

At first, the tiny monkey sat quietly.

His wide eyes searched the yard.

He looked toward the doorway.

No Mom.

He turned his head toward the garden.

Still no Mom.

Then his tiny lips began to tremble.

A soft whimper escaped his mouth.

“Mom…?”

There was no answer.

Suddenly, Maoming began crying loudly.

His tiny hands reached desperately into the empty air as though he expected Mom’s arms to appear and lift him from the mat.

But nobody came immediately.

His cries became sharper.

More desperate.

Tears gathered around his frightened eyes as his little body trembled with emotion.

He wasn’t hungry yet.

He wasn’t asking for toys.

He didn’t want to play.

He wanted something much simpler.

Mom.

Since arriving in his new home, Maoming had become deeply attached to her warmth and affection.

Whenever he was frightened, Mom held him.

Whenever he was hungry, Mom fed him.

Whenever the world felt unfamiliar, her arms became the one place where everything felt safe again.

Now that comfort was gone.

Even though it had only been a few moments, to Maoming it felt like forever.

He crawled awkwardly toward the edge of the mat and stared intensely at the doorway.

Then he cried again.

Louder than before.

Inside the house, Mom suddenly heard him.

“Oh, Maoming!”

She quickly grabbed the things she had been preparing and hurried outside.

The moment Maoming saw her, he froze.

For one brief second, the crying stopped.

Then he stretched both tiny arms toward her and screamed even louder, as if releasing every emotion he had been holding inside.

Mom immediately put everything down and lifted him into her arms.

“I’m here,” she whispered.

Maoming clung tightly to her shirt.

His tiny fingers refused to let go.

Mom held him against her chest and gently rubbed his back.

Slowly, the sharp cries became quiet whimpers.

The trembling stopped.

His breathing calmed.

Mom kissed his forehead.

“You thought I left you, didn’t you?”

Maoming looked up with wet, emotional eyes.

Then he buried his face against her chest again.

Mom’s heart melted.

She had gone away for only a few minutes.

But those few minutes had revealed something powerful.

Maoming didn’t simply depend on her for food and care.

He depended on her for love.

After putting on his clean diaper and clothes, Mom sat with him on the mat instead of immediately returning inside.

She cuddled him.

She stroked his tiny head.

She let him hold her fingers for as long as he wanted.

Soon, Maoming’s frightened expression disappeared completely.

His eyes became sleepy as he rested peacefully in her lap.

The morning was quiet once again.

But this time, Maoming wasn’t alone.

For such a tiny baby, love wasn’t something complicated.

Love was a familiar voice.

A gentle touch.

A warm embrace.

And two caring arms that always came back when he cried.

As Maoming slowly fell asleep against her chest, Mom kissed his head and whispered the promise his little heart needed most:

“I’m here, baby. You’re safe with me.”
