Selena and Ronaldo grew up side by side, but their personalities couldn’t have been more different. Ronaldo woke up each morning ready to leap into the world, while Selena clung tightly to comfort, nervous of anything unfamiliar. Today was no different. As the caregiver opened the play area, Ronaldo rushed forward with a burst of excitement, while Selena pressed herself into the caregiver’s chest, trembling softly.

Ronaldo bounced from toy to toy, chirping with joy as he explored the mat, the leaves, and every little noise around him. He rolled on his back, climbed a tiny block, and hopped down proudly. Every move he made seemed to shout, Look at me! Come play! But when he turned to show Selena, she only tucked her head lower, scared to even take one step forward.

The caregiver rubbed Selena’s back gently, whispering encouragement. Selena peeked out for a moment, watching Ronaldo’s happy chaos with wide, worried eyes. Her heart wanted to try—just a little—but fear pulled her back each time. The open space felt too big, the toys too loud, the freedom too overwhelming. She let out a tiny moan, unsure of herself, unsure of the world.

Then Ronaldo did something special. Instead of running off again, he slowly walked back to her. He didn’t pull or push. He didn’t squeak loudly. He simply sat beside her, close enough for her to feel his warmth. With a soft chirp, he offered her a small leaf he had picked up. Selena stared at it nervously, then at him. Ronaldo wasn’t scared. Ronaldo was happy.

After a long pause, Selena reached out and took the leaf. Ronaldo chirped in delight, nudging her gently. Selena hesitated, but this time she stepped forward—just one tiny step. Ronaldo stayed beside her, hopeful and patient.

She wasn’t ready to play freely yet. But today, she tried.
And for a frightened little heart, that was the bravest thing of all.
