Little Selena was in one of her most dramatic moods ever! That morning, Mommy prepared her usual feeding routine, but today there was something different nearby—a new food Selena had never seen before. The moment Mommy brought it into view, Selena stared at it suspiciously.
She tilted her little head, sniffed the unfamiliar smell, and immediately turned her face away.
“No! No! No!”
Selena made loud, unhappy cries and clung to Mommy as if she wanted to escape the strange thing completely. Mommy tried to reassure her with a gentle voice, but Selena wasn’t interested in listening. She looked at the food again, shook her head, and complained even louder.
“Oh, Selena, sweetheart,” Mommy said softly. “You’ve never tried this before, have you?”
Selena answered with another dramatic squeal!
Mommy carefully moved the food away from Selena’s face. She didn’t force it into her mouth or try to make her swallow. She understood that the unfamiliar smell, appearance, and texture might be frightening for such a little monkey.
After a few minutes, Mommy tried showing Selena the food from a comfortable distance. Selena immediately recognized it and began protesting all over again. She turned her back, waved her tiny hands, and made the most offended expression imaginable.
It seemed that Selena had made up her mind: she absolutely did not want that strange food!
Mommy couldn’t help smiling at her little girl’s dramatic reaction, but she remained patient. She knew that repeatedly presenting food when Selena was upset would only make the experience more stressful.
“It’s okay, my little girl. You don’t have to eat it right now,” Mommy whispered.
She put the unfamiliar food away and gave Selena some quiet time to relax. Then she followed Selena’s usual feeding plan, offering an appropriate familiar food that was safe for her age and dietary needs.
Selena’s mood began to change.
She stopped crying, looked toward Mommy, and gradually settled down. Mommy stayed nearby, watching her carefully while she ate.
Once Selena felt comfortable again, Mommy allowed her to observe the unfamiliar food from a distance without pressure. Selena looked at it suspiciously one more time, then quickly turned toward Mommy as if asking her to take it away!
Mommy laughed gently.
“Oh, my little drama queen! You really aren’t ready for that today!”
Selena leaned against Mommy, looking much calmer now that the strange food was gone. Mommy gave her a gentle cuddle and let her rest.
Over the following days, Mommy planned to introduce any suitable new foods gradually, following professional guidance and watching Selena’s reactions. If Selena continued refusing food, struggled to chew or swallow, or showed signs of illness, Mommy would seek advice from a veterinarian experienced with primates.
That day, Selena didn’t eat the unfamiliar food—and that was okay. She had been given time to feel safe, her nutritional needs remained the priority, and nobody forced her to do something that frightened her.
As Selena finally relaxed in Mommy’s arms, Mommy whispered, “You can learn new things at your own pace, sweetheart.”
Little Selena might be stubborn, but she deserves patience, too. Sometimes, the best way to help a baby accept something new is to stop pushing and let trust come first.
