Getting Worse: Even if Mickey’s Leg Can’t Recover, I’ll Still Take Care of Mickey

The situation seemed to grow more heartbreaking with each passing day. Mickey, a beloved little monkey with soft brown fur and the gentlest eyes, was struggling. His once playful energy had been dimmed by an injury to his leg that refused to heal properly. Every step he tried to take was a painful reminder of his vulnerability.

I watched him from the corner of the room, his tiny frame curled up in a warm blanket. Despite his pain, Mickey’s eyes sparkled with trust and love, silently seeking comfort and reassurance. It was a trust I vowed never to break.

The vet had warned me that Mickey’s leg might never recover fully. The words hit me hard, but my resolve was stronger. I didn’t adopt Mickey just for the joyful moments—we were in this together, through good times and bad. If Mickey’s leg couldn’t heal, I’d adjust. We’d adjust.

I began researching everything I could about mobility aids for monkeys. If he needed a special brace or even a tiny wheelchair, I’d get it. I modified our home, adding soft cushions and ramps to make moving around easier for him.

Mickey seemed to sense my determination. On days when he was feeling down, I’d sit by his side, gently stroking his fur and whispering promises that we’d figure it out together. Despite the pain, he’d nuzzle into my hand, his quiet way of saying, “I trust you.”

Some might see this as a burden, but to me, it’s an honor. Mickey is family. No matter what challenges come our way, I’ll be there for him—his protector, his friend, his constant source of love. Because that’s what family does.
