Tiny Jasmine was having a very determined morning. She had just noticed Mommy preparing a small piece of ripe banana, and the moment she saw it, her little eyes became wide with excitement. Jasmine immediately leaned forward and reached both tiny hands toward the banana.
Mommy smiled. “Wait a moment, little Jasmine. Mommy will help you.”
But Jasmine had completely different plans.
She wanted the banana herself.
“Eeeeh! Eeee!” Jasmine cried, stretching her arms as far as she could. She wiggled impatiently and tried to grab the banana from Mommy’s hand. Her tiny fingers opened and closed repeatedly, determined to get hold of it.
Mommy gently moved it just out of reach.
“Jasmine, sweetheart, let Mommy give you a safe little piece.”
Jasmine’s face immediately became serious.
She let out another dramatic cry and reached even harder. Her little body leaned forward with excitement, and she looked at Mommy as if she couldn’t understand why Mommy wouldn’t simply hand over the entire banana.
“You’re very determined today, aren’t you?” Mommy laughed softly.
Jasmine answered with an angry little squeak.
She tried again.
This time, her tiny fingers almost reached the banana. Mommy carefully kept it secure and broke off a small, age-appropriate piece instead. She made sure Jasmine was sitting safely and supervised her closely while eating.
“Here you go,” Mommy said.
Jasmine grabbed the small piece with both hands.
For a moment, she looked incredibly proud of herself.
She inspected the banana, turned it around in her little fingers, and then carefully brought it toward her mouth. Mommy stayed right beside her, watching closely to make sure she was eating safely.
The moment Jasmine tasted it, her angry expression disappeared.
Her eyes brightened.
“See?” Mommy said. “You didn’t need to fight Mommy.”
Jasmine ignored the comment and happily took another tiny bite.
But then she noticed that Mommy still had another piece.
Her eyes immediately moved toward it.
“Oh, no,” Mommy teased. “You want more already?”
Jasmine reached out again.
“Eeee!”
Mommy laughed. “I knew it!”
Jasmine had clearly decided that she was responsible for the entire banana supply that morning. She stretched both hands toward Mommy and made another impatient little sound.
Mommy continued giving her only suitable small pieces at a safe pace, rather than letting Jasmine grab a large piece that could be difficult to eat safely.
After several bites, Jasmine finally slowed down. Her tiny hands became sticky, and she looked very pleased with herself. Mommy gently cleaned her little fingers and mouth while Jasmine watched the remaining banana carefully.
“You certainly have a big personality for such a tiny girl,” Mommy whispered.
Jasmine gave a satisfied little squeak.
Then she leaned against Mommy, apparently proud of her successful banana mission.
Her super temper had started the morning with loud protests and determined grabbing, but with patience and careful supervision, Jasmine eventually got to enjoy her favorite treat safely—and she seemed very happy that Mommy had allowed her to participate in feeding herself.
Mommy smiled and kissed the top of her head.
“Next time, little Jasmine, you can ask nicely.”
Jasmine looked at the banana.
Then she looked at Mommy.
And reached for another bite.
