“Luna, sweetheart, what happened?” Mom called as she quickly came outside.
Luna lifted her face slightly, her eyes wide with fear. Mud covered her little cheeks and forehead, while rainwater dripped from her fur. Another loud rumble of thunder echoed through the sky, and Luna immediately lowered her head again, trying to make herself as small as possible.
Mom gently reached toward her. “It’s okay, baby. I’m here.”
Luna slowly looked up. She seemed embarrassed by her muddy face, but more than anything, she wanted comfort. She stretched her little hands toward Mom, silently asking to be picked up.
Mom carefully lifted Luna from the slippery ground and carried her into the dry shelter. She wrapped the frightened baby in a soft, warm towel, gently wiping away the mud without rubbing too hard. Luna clung tightly to her, listening to the steady sound of Mom’s voice.
“You don’t have to be afraid of the rain,” Mom whispered. “You’re safe now.”
Luna still trembled whenever the thunder sounded. She tucked her face against Mom’s chest and held on tightly. Each time another burst of rain struck the roof, Mom gently stroked her back and reminded her that the storm would eventually pass.
After a few minutes, Luna began to relax.
Mom placed her safely on a clean, dry blanket and carefully checked that she was comfortable. Luna blinked at her muddy little hands, then looked toward the window. Outside, the rain was still falling heavily, but from inside the shelter, it no longer seemed quite so terrifying.
Then Luna did something unexpected.
She slowly crawled back into Mom’s lap and rested her head against her arm.
Mom smiled. “Oh, Luna. You just needed your mommy, didn’t you?”
Luna made a tiny happy sound and closed her eyes.
The storm continued for a while, but Luna was no longer frightened. Wrapped in warmth and surrounded by gentle care, she finally drifted into a peaceful sleep.
That rainy afternoon taught Luna something important: sometimes the world can suddenly feel big, noisy, and frightening. But having someone you trust nearby can make even the scariest storm feel a little smaller.
And as Mom watched Luna sleeping peacefully, she whispered, “No matter how muddy the ground gets or how loudly the rain falls, I’ll always be here to help you.”
